12/4

I spent about 4.5 hours on more illustrating today. My 'R' from "Recycled" is finished. I think the process will go much faster now that I will be reusing items to spell out the other letters.

And Another.

12/3

I spent about three hours last night illustrating recyclables for my poster. The 'R' is starting to take shape.

Photo Manipulation

This is the image as taken. The original.

This is the image after adjusting it in Photoshop.

12/2

I have, for now, pushed the handbook aside. After my meeting with the city of A2 they decided they want to see where my poster for U of M Housing goes. So I have begun to work solely on that. U of M Housing wants a rough (close to finished) draft by the end of the year so they can present it to their marketing team.

For the poster I have decided to do a bunch of illustrations of things that you find everywhere that can be recycled. These recyclable objects will be put in order to spell out "Recycle." That is the main graphic for the poster. Other than that I might have some text along the bottom giving facts, statistics, etc. about recycling.

So far I have a couple of different types of plastic bottles, a newspaper, and a cd.

11/25 - Great News!

I had my meting with the city of Ann Arbor today and it went better than I could have ever imagined. They loved my project and the look of the design I've been doing. They are willing to do my original project of the handbook and are willing to fund it. We still need to decide if it is better to print or to post online but they seemed receptive to printing it. So it went from maybe doing a 4 page insert in their Waste Watchers magazine to doing my full project. I am ecstatic!

11/18

I spent 2 hours today working on getting a solid table of contents done. I was trying to decide whether to have my contents go by topics such as water conservation, energy conservation, waste reduction, etc. or to have it go by a students daily routine like transportation, school/work, shopping etc. I decided on the latter because I thought it would better relate to students. After deciding on that I put together a rough design of it.

11/16

Today I worked on another spread for my handbook. I worked on it for about 1.5 hours. This next section I will be working on is recycling. I will be discussing the advantages to recycling and what what can be recycled in Ann Arbor. I will discuss how this is done and where it can be done.

11/13

Today I spent 3 hours doing various things with my project. I spent most of the time working on a couple of spreads about water conservation. I think they work a little better in speaking to the students because they deal with saving money while you are saving water.

I also contact Jeffrey Schroeder of U of M Housing to schedule a meeting next week with him and one of his student employees to discuss where they see this project going. We will also discuss what format this document will take so I can begin working on it.

11/12 + December Goal

Today I spent about 1 hour writing emails trying to get funding for my handbook. I also spent some nice of this time trying to get printing quotes for my handbook to see how much it will be to produce.

My goal for December will depend on which aspect of my project I will tackle first. If what I do first is the document for U of M Housing then I hope to have a rough layout of what I want to have designed for them. If I start on my handbook first I hope to have about 10 spreads done in it by December of the 20-25 spreads the book will have.

11/10

I worked from 5:30 - 7pm in my studio. I spent most of the time revising and cleaning up my thesis paper. I spent the rest of the time getting a better idea of my timeline.

11/7

After some critiques with some other designers about my spread on water conservation I made some changes. Some of the suggestions was that using an image of a water faucet was redundant and unneeded. Most thought that my infographics could stand for themselves as images. With that taken into consideration I spent about 3 hours working on another variation of it. In this other variation the infographic dominates the page as the main image.

11/3

I forgot to post this right after I did it but here is what I did on Monday.
I met for an hour with Jeff Schroeder of U of M housing to discuss my project. My project has changed since that meeting. I am now creating two different documents. One will be made for University Housing. This will be a smaller document that will speak only to students that will be living in the dorms next term. Due to budget constraints it won't be that long. It will be something less than 10 pages. I plan to work with them to create this and also to create posters that will be posted around the residence halls. These posters will deal with living more sustainable. To accompany this document I will create another book that will be longer (probably around 30-40 pages). This will be more geared to students living off campus. It will have similar information to the document for the students in the dorms but will be slightly altered to considered students off campus more. So I will now be creating two companion documents. One will be for dorm life and one will be for off-campus living but both will deal with student life. They will move away from the topic of global warming and more towards simple and sustainable living. Obviously there will be information on global warming because sustainability and global warming go hand in hand.

This is an spread that I spent about 2.5 hours on after our meeting dealing with water conservation.

10/27 + 10/29

10/27:
I was in my studio working from 4-7pm.
I spent my time revising my thesis draft and putting together my midterm presentation.
Through doing this I learned more about my project and it clarified it a bit for my.

10/29:
I was in my studio from 3:30-6:30
I spent a little bit of time refining my midterm presentation for tomorrow.
The rest of the rest of the time I spent creating a table of contents for my handbook. I decided that instead of having my tips spread throughout the book that I would have them go in sections as to what type of tip they were. My rough Table of Contents is as follows:

1 - What is global warming
- Global warming explained
- Greenhouse gasses explained
- Causes of global warming
- Scenarios if we don't deal with global warming

2- Your footprint
- How to find out your carbon footprint
- Carbon footprint averages throughout the world compared

3- Tips for your house
- Tightening leaky faucet
- Turning down your thermostat
- Buying compact fluorescent bulbs
- Fix drafts in your house

4- Tips for school
- Print less
- Bring your lunch
- Take the bus, walk, or ride a bike

5- Tips during daily routine
- Turn the faucet off while you brush teeth
- Take shorter showers
- Turn lights off when not using them
- Unplug things when done with them
- Turn off computer and unplug when not in use

6- Shopping
- Buy in bulk (in the sense of big containers means less packaging and waste)
- Bring your own bag
- Eat less meat
- Buy recycled products

Obviously the order of these things will change and I will be including informational graphics about the environment and global warming through out all of this.
