2/17 Done!

I am done with the first draft of the handbook and just sent it off to the city for them to look over. I am meeting with them on Friday to critique/discuss the first draft. I am too tired to upload images of it right now as I have spent the entire day finishing it. I will get to the images tomorrow.

I also met with University housing today and I my contact is going to look it over in depth and take from it what he wants to put in the brochure we are doing. I am going to be working on a mock-up of that until he gets me more information.

2/16/09

I have been working on the book all weekend. The book is almost done. Below is the first draft. There are some spreads that aren't complete yet (Toxics, Clean Air, Keeping Water Clean and The Great Outdoors). I plan to have it all done by Wednesday so I can send it to the city before our meeting on Friday.

2/10 IP Thus Far

This weekend I didn't do much IP. I told everyone at the career fair that my website had all the work I was showing them on it. Which it didn't, so I had to get that ready. It is finished - www.devin-macdonald.com - check it out if you want. I spent all yesterday on IP. Here is where I am: I have 11 pages pretty well set. I am a bit behind on what I wanted to send to the city but I can get them what I wanted to get them 8 spreads (16 pages) today or tomorrow. I am meeting with Dwayne Overmyer tomorrow to discuss my book. That will no doubt be very helpful. So, here are the spreads so far.

2/4

This week has been dominated by getting my portfolio ready for the career expo tomorrow. It is also nice to have it ready for when I start applying for jobs. I have done a little bit with my book. Today I set a final timeline I cannot deviate from:

Feb 7-8 : 8 spreads done (drafts)
Feb 13-14 : 12 spread done (drafts) this means I am done with the book.
Feb 15-21 meet with city and critique entire book.
Feb 22-28 (spring break) revisions
Mar 1-7 meet with city again / decide on final design / send to printer no later than March 9th.

This allows me to get the prints back by the 23rd. If something goes wrong I have something for the show but can make another printer run before the actual show. I will have more spreads to show after this weekend.

1/27

I have been working this past week and weekend on taking all the text and statistics that I have gotten from the city and trying to turn it into spreads that will go into my book. So far I am pretty happy with the results. I am also somewhat on schedule which is nice. I got a late start due to the city not getting me the information until about 5 days after I had asked for it.
I got about 4 spreads done by yesterday. I hope to have 4 more spreads done this week which makes me 2/3 done designing the book. I sent these spreads to the city today and am hoping to get responses by the end of the week.

This is the table of contents and the introduction talking about the reader's ecological footprint.

This is a spread about energy efficiency including a few tips on how to be energy efficient and an information graphic on greenhouse gasses produced in the city of Ann Arbor.

This spread continues to talk about energy efficiency in the form of renewable energy. Then it transitions into the next section talking about 'Zero Waste.'

This is part of the next spread dealing with alternative transportation.

Week of 1/19

This week I have spent a lot of time working and reworking my thesis. I think I have it at a good place.

I have been in a holding pattern with my book until today when I got a good portion of the information to go in the book from the city. I have started thinking of how I want this book to go together. So, I have begun with my table of contents.

Work over break.

Over the break I spent most of my time working on the handbook for the City of Ann Arbor. Below are three of the spreads I have completed. These will obviously go through many revisions but this is where the design is at right now.

I had a meeting with the city today and they like what I have done. At the moment they are gathering more information and getting back to me with it next Friday. We have decided that the booklet will be about 28 pages. We will use 2 colors and 2 screens of those colors.

Also over break I completed the poster/mailer for U of M Housing. I have a meeting with them this coming Monday. We will discuss another poster maybe tackling the topic of conservation and a small booklet of 2-4 pages.
